The 2008 UK Barista Champion Hugo, the
man usually found behind the espresso machine at Relish Food
& Drink won the 2008 UK Barista Championship. Over three days of competition in London's Excel centre in Docklands, the UK's top twenty four baristas competed for the title. Barista is the italian for barman, now used as an international term for an espresso coffee specialist. The competition asks each Barista to produce 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos and four 'signature' espresso based drinks that are assessed by four sensory judges, two technical judges and a head judge.
In June Hugo jetted off to Copenhagen to represent the UK at the World Barista Championships, where the top baristas from 52 countries competed for the ultimate coffee prize, the title of World Barista Champion. The 2007 UK champion, James Hoffmann of Square Mile Coffee Roasters, won the World championships held in Japan. Rachel and Sarah, our encyclopedic fountains of knowledge on most things comestible recently sat their Guild of Fine Food exams. Rachel achieved credits in both Cheese & Charcuterie diploma whilst Sarah (show-off & boss) achieved a distinction in her Cheese diploma. We shared a table with, amongst others, the wonderful Steve & Sarah Skinner, owners of Cornwalls coolest brewery who won an award in the Cornish distinctiveness category.. The winner of our category, two other categories and winner of winners was the Headland Hotel itself... the awards host! 14th

2007. Relish Food & Drink took part in Organic Fortnight,
organised by the Soil Association. This was an interesting exercise in
sourcing local organic food to produce a fully organic breakfast menu.
Though a challenge we managed to keep our whole breakfast menu,
thanks mainly to using a lot of organics anyway! Additional help came from
the nice folk at Organic
Southwest.
